Summary:

The Sixth (Legal) Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, as one of the main committees of the UN GA, plays an important role in reviewing actual topics of International Law. It is the primary forum for the consideration of various legal questions in the General Assembly. During the 66th session of the UN GA, besides dealing with number of reports of legal bodies such as the International Law Commission or the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law, the Sixth Committee also commented draft articles on nationality of natural persons in relation to the succession of States or on law of transboundary aquifers. Furthermore, attention of States was paid to actual topics as the rule of law at the national and international levels or the scope and application of the principle of universal jurisdiction. However, some items contained in the agenda of the Committee do not result in any concrete outcome even after decades of discussions on them (e.g. measures to eliminate international terrorism or disputable is also session of the Special Committee on the Charter of the United Nations and on the Strengthening of the Role of the Organization). Perhaps, new topics in the Sixth Committee, more deepen consideration of the ILC draft articles or removing some items that are far from consensus from the programme, would help to overcome current stagnation in the agenda of the Sixth Committee as well as codification of International Law.
